The Consumer Price Index Report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that food prices have increased 11.4% between August 2021 and August 2022. Officials have identified global events like the pandemic, drought conditions and war in Ukraine as the key events that led to these historic inflation rises.
Across the Board
Food supplies have been affected by inflation. The prices of meat, poultry, and fish have increased 8.8%; fruits and vegetables have increased 9.4% and 17% respectively, while milk has increased 17% and eggs by 39.8%.
Restaurants and grocery stores are also trying to cut costs. Restaurants have had to increase their prices to offset higher food costs.
The price of menu items is rising
To keep up with rising food costs and increased wages, restaurants had to raise their menu prices by 9 percent. This price increase may not stop for long, which will be a problem for the restaurant owners.
